Funny story behind Samgyeopsal (삼겹살) - When the air quality is bad, Korean people eat samgyeopsal!

Samgyeopsal is one of the most popular food among Korean people because of its reasonable price compared to other meat. The price of pork is much lower than that of beef in South Korea.

Besides that, what makes samgyeopsal the most beloved food in South Korea is definitely its taste - it's tender and crisp. It also goes well with all kinds of sauces, red pepper paste (gochujang, 고추장) and fermented soybean paste (doenjang, 된장). When eating it wrapped in leaves of lettuce and sesame, it becomes beyond a piece of pork.

Most of all, it is fun to barbecue samgyeopsal. :)

One thing I missed the most about Korea when living abroad is samgyeopsal. Obviously they eat pork in the UK and France where I stayed. Why don't they make samgyeopsal though?

Other parts of pork cannot beat the taste of samgyeopsal. The secret of its taste lies in the layers of fat in samgyeopsal.

"Sam"(삼) literally means 'three' and "Gyeop"(겹) means a layer - so "samgyeop" means three layers. When you see the samgyeopsal you can see the layers of fat.

Korean people love eating samgyeopsal (삼겹살) in all seasons, as much as you guys do.😋

However, there is a specific season where the consumption of samgyeopsal soars up. That is springtime when the yellow dust comes from the west.

When the air quality is bad, we "Let's eat samgyeopsal today!"

Why do Korean people eat samgyeopsal when the air is bad?

What are the relation between samgyeopsal and dust?

Believe it or not, we, Korean people believe that the grease in samgyeopsal can remove the dust and pollutants we inhaled outside. Yeah, we know that it does not make sense at all, and of course there is no scientific evidence. 😂

Probably we just made up an excuse for eating samgyeopsal.

Yellow dust is part of natural phenomenon that we have had for a long period of time. According to the first record written, Korean peninsula was being affected almost 2000 years ago. During springtime, the wind flows from west to east and this wind delivers the dust and sand from the dried desert in northern China.

As you know well, over the last couple of years we have been suffering from fine dust, which is more harmful than yellow dust and it became a great threat in our lives. For now, it is hard to control due to the direction of the wind and other. Also, we have our own domestic issues to tackle in order to make the air cleaner.

Since the bad air quality is not a seasonal issue any more, I hardly hear people saying "samgyeopsal joke".

We still eat samgyeopsal quite often no matter what the weather is like.

When do you usually crave samgyeopsal? :)
